MCT Oil: What is it and why you should use it everyday!

Note: MCTs are found in many foods but coconuts and palm have some of the highest amounts. Palm is not a very sustainable source of MCTs so try to avoid these as much as possible. That being said, most sources of MCT oil will have some palm oil in it so don't sweat it to much.

MCT oil stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides, and YES I said triglycerides- as in fat!! MCTs are a form of fat that when broken into single fatty acids are short enough (6-12 carbons) to be directly absorbed across the intestinal barrier, which means they can be directly transported into your blood stream. Now some of you may be thinking, 'Oh NO! I am NOT eating fat because fat makes you fat.' Well, first off, I want to say that I am going to squelch the rumor of fat causing you to gain weight in a later blog, but secondly, this fat can be used in many ways in your body, which is why it has so many benefits.

Medium chain triglycerides, unlike longer chain triglycerides, are not stored in fat cells but are rather stored in the liver and brain where it can be used rapidly for energy production.

Research has shown that MCTs actually benefit weight loss efforts because it helps push your body into fat burning mode rather than carbohydrate metabolism. Also, because MCTs are fat, they also decrease appetite between meals and hasten satiety during a meal, thus leading to consuming less.

MCTs have many other benefits such as:

  • being protective for your liver
  • enhancing insulin sensitivity
  • fights off common bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium difficile
  • can help to balance cholesterol
  • easily accessed energy
  • improved focus and mental clarity
  • improved sleep

Athletes use MCTs to enhance their endurance during training and boost their performance in competition. Many studies have also found that supplementing with MCT can help slow progression of Alzheimer's disease.

Taking higher amounts of MCT oil can have a side effect of loose stools, so start with smaller amounts and work higher over time. Always talk to your doctor if you have any medical concerns.

Overall, MCTs have many benefits and when used appropriately can provide you with more energy and improved performance. Check out my recipe for coffee using MCT oil which is a great way to get your MCTs in and start your day with amazing energy.
